Thrift Store Finds That Make Your Home Feel Personal
- What I Love to ThriftI always look for heritage-style pieces: real wood, brass, handmade ceramics, vintage art - items with authenticity, character and craftsmanship that you can't find at big-box stores. These aren't trendy pieces you'll replace next year; they're the kind of things that add warmth, tell stories, and make your space uniquely yours.
Original Art & Frames
Thrift stores are such a goldmine for affordable, unique art that speaks to you personally! I love finding original paintings, sketches, vintage prints, and beautiful frames - pieces that make me feel something when I look at them. Art is so personal, and thrift stores let you discover one-of-a-kind pieces that reflect your taste without the gallery price tag.
What to look for:
- Original paintings in any style (keep an open mind!)
- Vintage sketches, watercolors, or charcoal drawings
- Embroidered or textile art pieces
- Beautiful vintage frames (wood, brass, ornate details)
- Funky prints or illustrations that speak to you

Wooden Items
Real wood - walnut, oak, teak - has a warmth and permanence that ages beautifully. Scratches and patina add character instead of making it look "used," and each piece has unique grain and organic shape that brings natural warmth to your space. I'm always hunting for wooden pieces with that solid, handcrafted quality you just don't find in new stores.
What to look for:
- Wooden bowls, boxes, and trays
- Vintage cutting boards (gorgeous hung on walls or as serving pieces - still hunting one myself!)
- Small wooden stools and plant stands
- Wooden vases and candlesticks
- Inlaid or checkered wood pieces

Ceramics & Pottery
Ceramics - especially handmade/vintage - add so much character and visual interest to your home! I love finding organic-shaped vases that make flowers feel special, and functional pieces like bowls and containers that bring warmth to everyday routines. Handmade pottery has that unique, one-of-a-kind quality that levels up your styling game.
What to look for:
- Handmade pottery (look for artist signatures!)
- Functional bowls and containers for kitchen or desk
- Unusual textures and glaze combinations
- Ceramic lamps and light fixtures
- Interesting ceramic figurines or sculptures

Character Pieces & Little Treasures
This is where your home starts feeling like yours and nobody else's! Little brass figurines, vintage candlesticks, crystal bowls, quirky sculptures - these are the personal pieces that hold memories, spark conversations, and make you smile when you spot them on a shelf. Maybe you found that ceramic fish on a special trip, or that brass candlestick reminds you of your grandmother's house. These collected-over-time treasures are what give a home soul and personality.
What to look for:
- Brass and silver candlesticks (heavy, with patina!)
- Small figurines and sculptures (ceramic, wood, brass, or stone)
- Decorative objects with personality (trinket dishes, unusual containers)
- Anything that makes you feel something - joy, nostalgia, curiosity
- Pieces that tell a story or hold a memory

My Tips for Thrift Store Treasure Hunting
Be Patient & Picky (But Keep an Open Mind!): This collection has taken me years to build - and that's the beauty of it! Be intentional about what you bring home, but also stay open to possibilities. So many incredible pieces look like nothing when they're crammed on shelves buried under other stuff. Don't be afraid to dig, use your imagination, and visualize how something could look in your space. Most things can also be altered, fixed, or upcycled - stay tuned for an upcoming post about that! 😉Best Places to Find Treasures:
- Flea markets: Great for budget finds (skip the fancy antique-focused ones - they're pricier!)
- Thrift store chains: Bigger selection but you'll have to dig through more mass-produced items and lots of plastic
- Local thrift stores: Very individual to your area - explore what's near you!
- Estate sales: Often have quality vintage pieces (check local listings)
- Family & friends: Ask grandparents, family, or friends if they have anything in their garage or attic they'd part with!
- Online platforms: Facebook Marketplace, local exchange groups, or neighborhood "buy nothing" groups
- My favorite: Thrifting on vacation! Experience different thrifting cultures and bring home a meaningful souvenir that doesn't scream the city's name
